When to Use Ceramic, Stone, Glass, and Porcelain

Ceramic

Ceramic tiles, which are a mix of minerals, clay, and water, are fired at high temperatures.
Then, the glazed styles are treated with a liquid glass coating and fired again. The process creates a hard surface that is resistant to stains and scratches.

Pros:

Typically affordable
Durable and easy to install
Available in a wide array of colours and designs

Cons:

Not recommended for high-impact areas
Colours may vary from lot to lot
Handmade tiles can be expensive

Stone

Stone tiles are known for their one-of-a-kind look. These tiles are made with pieces of natural stone that are cut into thin, regular pieces. The stone material can be granite, marble, slate, travertine, onyx, or sandstone, to name a few.

Pros:

Ideal for walls, backsplashes, and floors
Unique aesthetic
Granite tiles may be used instead of a slab

Cons:

Can be damaged by water, pigment, or acid exposure
Extra maintenance may be required
Resealing needed every 10 years

Glass

Thin pieces of glass are sold individually or as a mosaic. Sometimes, glass is combined with other types of tile on a mesh backing. Many clients choose glass tiles because of their impressive colours.

Pros:

Ideal for walls and backsplashes
Colourful, reflective, and easy to clean
Some glasses are rated for use on floors

Cons:

Can be expensive
Adhesive is visible through the tile
Can be difficult to install

Porcelain

A type of ceramic tile, porcelain tiles are fired at higher temperatures than standard ceramic. This makes porcelain denser and less porous than ceramic. Due to its durability, porcelain is preferred by a lot of property owners.
